Driving on Britain’s roads can sometimes be like a nightmare , drivers wanting to be on time for work or rushing home after a hard day just to get the extra few minutes of precious ‘home time’
Think about it, get good habits now and save yourself a life of grief and stress, rushing around not only has the potential to take years off your life but could ultimately kill innocent people
Less wear and tear on your vehicle will save you a small fortune with forward planning and anticipation during your driving, your fuel costs and your heart rate will be reduced significantly too
My advice is to set off on your journey earlier and aim to get to your destination 10 to 15 minutes early, that way if you get held up your stress levels will stay low and you will have a much nicer day
If you find yourself stuck in traffic or simply very late for work, getting stressed about it will only make it worse and achieve very little except to knock a few more minutes off your life

Weight
Don't drive around with unnecessary weight in your car - the engine will use more fuel. Take out anything that you don't need on the journey.
Don't carry roof boxes and roof racks when unless you're using them - the extra drag will add to fuel consumption. The same goes for open windows and sunroofs, and get any loose external trim fixed.
Look after your car
Stick to the manufacturer's service schedule, and get work carried out by a competent garage. Under inflated tyres can increase your fuel consumption, so check them regurlarly. Also, keep an eye on your fuel use and investigate sudden changes.
Switch off
Modern engines don't need to be warmed up before you start driving, so get in and drive off straightaway.
If you get stuck in traffic, or at railway crossings switch the engine off. Air-conditioning, heated seats and other electrics also increase your fuel consumption, so switch off whatever you don't need.
Anticipate
By being aware of what's happening on the road ahead, you can drive greener as well as safer. Always try to keep the car moving, and allow the engine to slow the car rather than the brakes - this gives more time for the cars in front to move off. Avoid sudden braking and don't accelerate when you can see that you will have to slow down again soon. Finally, use gravity on slopes to start the car rolling, rather than the accelerator.
Lower your speed
Sticking to the speed limit can save fue and you'll be less stressed and have a calmer journey. Cruise control can help you maintain a steady speed. Use the highest gear possible without letting the engine labour, and try changing straight from second to fourth gear, or third to fifth – (block changing) this saves time, fuel and clutch wear and tear.
Leave the car at home
A car's engine is at its most inefficient when cold, so consider not using it for short trips.Walk or ride a bike instead. Consider using public transport.
Plan
If you don't need to travel during rush hour, avoid the congested times. Plan a route that misses busy areas or road works, and try to stick to roads that allow you to drive at a steady speed rather than having to stop and start. Consider car sharing.
Change your driving style
Learn to press the accelerator lightly and smoothly. Don't over-rev the engine; keep the revs under 3000rpm.
Give yourself more time for journeys so you don't have to rush, and stay relaxed for a smoother trip.
