To learn how to move off from a parked position at the roadside safely, using effective observations and under full control of the vehicle, then to pull up on the left at a safe, legal and convenient place using the MSM routine correctly
After you have carried out the cockpit drill (DSSSM) you then need to carry out the safety precautions before starting the engine, the first is to make certain that the gears are in the neutral position then check to see that the handbrake is applied. Push the clutch down to the floor (as a double safety check) we do this in case we did not put the gear lever in neutral by accident (just woke up and feeling a little tired for example can cause us to think we placed it in neutral but it may still be in gear) then start the engine by turning the ignition key up towards the front windscreen and releasing the key as soon as the engine starts (the key will find it's correct position due to a spring loaded device)
Next is the POM routine (Prepare, Observe, Move)
To prepare, keep the clutch to the floor and engage first gear using the 'palm to passenger' method, move your left hand to the handbrake and ease the clutch upwards (release pressure on it) until you see the bonnet of the car rise up very slightly, at this point you may notice that the engine sounds a little quieter (engine revs go down slightly) you may also hear a creaking sound coming from the rear this is the car trying to move while the handbrake is applied. At this point you must squeeze pressure back on to the clutch but only by about the thickness of a pound coin. Then keep your left foot as still as possible. That is the prepare part completed.
Next is the second part of the POM, the observe routine
You need to do a quick but effective 'six point check' Begin by looking over your left shoulder to cover that 'blind spot' next is the left door mirror then look straight ahead - now it's the interior mirror and then the right door mirror. If all looks clear and safe to move off then finish off with a right shoulder 'blind spot' check.
If all is clear and safe press the gas pedal so you have a 'lively hum' on the engine, then as you move your head to the front release the handbrake and at the same time ease pressure off the clutch but only by the thickness of a pound coin, the car will now start to move, (if it seems to be going too fast then slight pressure on the clutch will bring the speed under control) as the car gains momentum then ease off the clutch a pound coin thickness at a time, once the car is going at around five MPH (walking pace) you can then take your foot off the clutch.
As the car starts to move you should steer to the right into a 'normal driving position' (about one metre from the kerb) and point the car in the direction you wish to travel using the 'push - pull' method of steering
When the car is straightened up in the direction you wish to travel then have a good check in your mirrors and all around before gently accelerating if all is safe
(good idea not to try the moving off before you know how to stop)
