Take into account the road and weather conditions as well as the legal speed limits in order to judge the safest speed to drive at

The national speed limit sign below

National speed limit

Means the maximum speed you can drive legaly, it is a LIMIT not a target, when you are driving a car and you see this sign on a single carriageway road it means the maximum speed is 60 miles per hour, and when on a dual carriageway it means 70 miles per hour maximum

If you are in a built up area with street lamps and no speed bumps or chicanes and you can't see any speed limit signs then you can assume that the speed limit is 30 miles per hour until you see a sign that says otherwise, for example some urban roads have signs for 40 or even 50 miles per hour

30 mph

If the conditions are not good, for example icy, foggy or wet then you must judge your safest speed and slow down while keeping a greater distance from the vehicles ahead, driving too slowly can become a danger too, for example if the speed limit and conditions allow you to travel quite fast and you are holding up following traffic by driving TOO slowly they could become frustrated and angry and take risks to overtake you

Tip

If you are uncertain of the speed limit on the road you are on, do not travel faster than 30 miles per hour until you ARE sure of the speed limit, that way you have a better chance of keeping the points off your licence and being a safer driver

Tip

In very cold weather always assume that you may be actually driving on black ice right now and adjust your speed and distance from the vehicle ahead, remember it is called black ice because you can't see it

Tip

In very cold or wet weather conditions begin to slow down a LOT sooner for everything than in normal driving conditions

Tip

Good training from a reputable driving instructor can save you lots of heartache and money, don't go for the cheap driving school offers, remember you will only get the quality that you pay for and you will become a confident driver if taught correctly
